Welcome to Open Source Startups

We track 842 open source projects, 1,580 free public APIs, and continuously monitor for license changes and abandonment. Here's why.

BY OPEN SOURCE STARTUPS

If you've ever depended on an open source project that suddenly relicensed to BSL, got archived, or quietly stopped shipping releases — this site is for you.

What we do

We curate 842 open source projects across 12 categories, plus 1,580 free public APIs across 52 categories. Every project is enriched with live GitHub data — stars, forks, language, license, topics, last commit. We refresh nightly.

More importantly: we monitor every project for license changes and abandonment signals. If Redis, Elastic, HashiCorp, or your favorite small dependency relicenses to BSL/SSPL/Elastic License — you'll see it on our /alerts feed within 24 hours.

How to use the site

  • Browse by category — /category/ai-and-ml, /category/database, etc.
  • Browse by language — /language/typescript, /language/rust, etc.
  • Browse by license — /license/mit, /license/agpl-3-0, etc.
  • Compare two projects head-to-head — /compare/n8n/automatisch.
  • See what's trending this week — /trending/this-week.
  • See what's been abandoned — /abandoned.
  • Find SaaS alternatives — /alternatives/notion, /alternatives/slack, etc.
  • Get license-change alerts — sign in and click "WATCH PROJECT" on any listing.

Why we built it

Existing directories (OpenAlternative, AlternativeTo, Awesome lists) are great for discovery but don't track ongoing project health. We wanted a single place that combined: (1) a curated directory, (2) live GitHub data, (3) license-change monitoring, (4) abandonment alerts, and (5) actual editorial opinion in the form of FAQs and editor's takes.

Built by Tiny Startup Studio. Free forever. No paid placements. If a project tells us they want their listing updated or removed, we do it — no questions asked.
