The Creative Desktop, Unsubscribed

Creative software rents you access to your own files, and the files stop opening when the card expires. Penpot and Graphite cover UI and vector work, Excalidraw and Tldraw cover the whiteboard, and OBS Studio, Kap, Cap and ShareX cover every screenshot and screen recording you would have sent through Loom. All of it exports to formats that outlive the vendor.

Figma is a browser-based interface design tool with multiplayer editing, components, prototyping and developer handoff.

// TAKE · Penpot is the only project here that seriously takes on the whole workflow, multiplayer editing, components, prototyping and handoff, and its use of open standards like SVG means files stay yours. OpenPencil deserves attention for opening .fig files directly, which matters when you are migrating rather than starting fresh, and Graphite is the better tool once the work turns into illustration.

Sketch is a macOS vector design app for UI and icon work, with symbols, shared libraries and a plugin ecosystem.

// TAKE · Penpot is the practical replacement: same components, shared libraries and design-file workflow, only in the browser and cross-platform, which also removes the Mac-only constraint that pushes teams off Sketch. Graphite is the stronger pure vector editor if you draw icons and illustrations rather than screens, and Grida is worth a look only if you want design output wired directly into code.

Adobe Illustrator is a professional vector graphics editor for illustration, logos, typography and print-ready artwork.

// TAKE · Graphite is the only project here aimed at the same job, and its nondestructive node-based approach to vector art is genuinely interesting, but it is still young and thin on print output and colour management. Penpot handles paths and boolean operations competently and is the safer choice if your illustrations feed a product UI rather than a press.

Adobe XD is Adobe's UI design and prototyping tool for screen layouts, interactive prototypes and developer handoff.

// TAKE · Penpot is the only project here that replaces XD outright, with vector design, components and clickable prototypes in the browser and self-hosting if you need it. Quant-UX is narrower but better when a prototype exists to be tested on real users, and Plasmic is a different bet entirely, turning visual editing into production React rather than design files.

Miro is an infinite collaborative whiteboard for workshops, diagrams, sticky-note sessions and product planning.

// TAKE · Tldraw is the closest to Miro's infinite multiplayer canvas and the right base if you want a whiteboard embedded in your own product. Excalidraw is more polished for quick sketching and diagrams but deliberately narrow in scope, Affine bundles boards with documents and tasks in one workspace, and Penpot is a design and prototyping tool rather than a workshop canvas.

Paper is a digital sketching and drawing app for capturing ideas, diagrams and freehand visual notes on a tablet.

// TAKE · Nothing here reproduces the loose freehand feel of a stylus sketchpad, but Graphite comes closest as an actual drawing canvas with brushes and a nondestructive node graph. Penpot is the better pick if your sketches are really wireframes headed for a UI, and Quant-UX only makes sense once you want to click through and test those screens.

Pencil is a design and prototyping tool for sketching interfaces, drawing mockups and wiring them into clickable flows.

// TAKE · Penpot is the most complete replacement when the work is interface design and clickable prototypes, while Graphite is the better tool when you are actually drawing, since its node-based nondestructive vector editing has no equivalent in the others. Quant-UX is narrow but useful when a prototype exists to be tested on users rather than handed to developers.

Loom records your screen and webcam and turns each recording into an instantly shareable link with transcripts and comments.

// TAKE · Cap is the closest replacement, since it copies the record-then-get-a-link workflow and lets you point it at your own storage; Snapify does the same thing with a smaller feature set. Screenity is the easiest install if you live in Chrome but stops at local files, and obs-studio is far more powerful while being the wrong tool entirely for quick async messages.

CleanShot captures, annotates and records the Mac screen, then uploads the result and hands back a shareable link.

// TAKE · Cap is the closest replacement on macOS, with polished capture and instant share links from a hosted or self-hosted backend. ShareX beats it on sheer feature count including OCR and custom uploaders, but it is Windows only; obs-studio records beautifully yet has no annotation or sharing workflow at all.

Screen Studio is a macOS screen recorder that automatically adds zooms, smooth cursor motion and polished animation to finished videos.

// TAKE · Cap is the closest match, pairing a polished recorder with instant share links and a backend you can host yourself. obs-studio will out-record everything here but gives you no automatic zooms or cursor smoothing, so you finish in a separate editor, and Kap is the light choice for quick GIFs.

Bandicam is a Windows screen and game recorder that captures gameplay, webcam and desktop video with hardware-accelerated encoding.

// TAKE · obs-studio is the direct replacement for game and desktop capture, matching Bandicam on hardware encoding and beating it on scenes and streaming, at the cost of a busier first-run setup. ShareX fits better if most of your captures are short clips and screenshots sent straight to a share target.

ScreenFlow is a macOS screen recorder with a full timeline video editor for tutorials, callouts, captions and screencasts.

// TAKE · Nothing here matches ScreenFlow's timeline editor, and obs-studio in particular captures superbly but hands you raw footage to cut elsewhere. Cap comes closest to a one-app workflow with recording, light trimming and instant sharing, while Screenity is the no-install option if you work in the browser.
