Break Up With Google

One login quietly owns your documents, files, spreadsheets, notes, browser and traffic data. CryptPad, Nextcloud, Grist, NocoDB, Joplin, Umami and Ladybird replace those pieces individually, so you can leave in stages instead of one heroic weekend. Start with Analytics and Drive, where the switch is cheapest and the payoff is biggest.

10 tools replaced · 38 open source projects · 1.1M combined GitHub stars

Google Analytics measures website traffic, acquisition channels, audiences and conversions through Google's hosted tag and reporting suite.

// TAKE · Matomo is the closest feature-for-feature swap, including goals, segments and e-commerce reporting, but it is the heaviest to host and several of its best features are paid plugins. Plausible Analytics and Umami cover most needs with a cookieless script and one readable dashboard, while PostHog is a different product entirely, aimed at product analytics rather than marketing reporting.

Google Drive provides cloud file storage and sync tied to Google's document editors, with sharing, search and collaborative editing.

// TAKE · Nextcloud is the only project here covering both halves of Drive, storage plus in-browser document editing through its office integrations, which is why it is the usual replacement despite needing careful tuning. Seafile is faster and more dependable at pure sync, OpenCloud is the lighter modern take on the same enterprise ground, and Ente handles photos and videos only.

Google Docs is a browser-based word processor with real-time collaborative editing, comments, suggestions and version history.

// TAKE · Docs from the French public sector suite is the closest in feel, a modern block editor built for real-time collaboration rather than a desktop app squeezed into a tab. collabora-online is the pick when .docx fidelity matters, since it runs the LibreOffice engine server-side, and CryptPad trades formatting depth for end-to-end encryption, which is a good deal only if privacy is the reason you are leaving.

Google Sheets is a browser-based spreadsheet with real-time collaboration, formulas, charts and scripting over shared workbooks.

// TAKE · For real spreadsheet work, collabora-online is the nearest match because it puts an actual Calc engine behind a collaborative browser UI, and Grist is better when your sheets are secretly databases with formulas across linked tables. NocoDB looks like a spreadsheet but is a database front end, so heavy formula workbooks will not port cleanly.

Google Keep is a lightweight note app for quick colored notes, checklists, reminders and voice memos synced to your Google account.

// TAKE · Memos is the closest in spirit, a fast self-hosted stream of short tagged notes rather than a document manager, and it runs happily on the smallest VPS. Joplin is the pick if you also want notebooks, reminders and solid offline mobile apps, while Logseq and AppFlowy are far heavier than anyone who just wants a quick list needs.

Google Tasks is a lightweight to-do list that syncs personal tasks, subtasks and due dates across Gmail, Calendar and mobile.

// TAKE · Vikunja is the closest match, giving you lists, due dates and reminders without project-management overhead, and Donetick is the better pick for recurring chores shared across a household. Plane, Taiga and OpenProject are full team issue trackers and will feel oversized for a personal task list.

Google Forms builds free online forms and surveys with question logic, response validation and results collected in a spreadsheet.

// TAKE · HeyForm is the nearest drop-in: a straightforward builder with conditional logic that you can self-host in an afternoon. Formbricks aims higher at in-product surveys and audience targeting, while LimeSurvey is the one to choose for long research questionnaires with complex branching and quotas.

Google Chrome is Google's Chromium-based web browser, with fast JavaScript execution, profile sync and the largest extension store.

// TAKE · Helium is the closest swap, keeping Chrome's engine and extensions while stripping out the Google telemetry, and Brave does much the same with built-in ad blocking and a larger team behind it. zen-browser means changing engines to Gecko, and Ladybird is a genuinely independent engine that is nowhere near ready for daily use.

Google Workspace bundles business email, calendar, cloud storage and collaborative documents, spreadsheets and slides under one managed account.

// TAKE · No single project replaces the bundle. CryptPad comes closest to the collaborative web suite, with encrypted docs, sheets and slides that several people can edit at once, while onlyoffice-docs beats it badly on Microsoft format fidelity if you pair it with a file platform. Tuta only fills the mail and calendar half, and LibreOffice is a desktop suite, not a shared workspace.

Replace Google Cloud Storage

ALL GOOGLE CLOUD STORAGE ALTERNATIVES →

Google Cloud Storage is Google's object storage service for buckets of files, with storage classes, lifecycle rules and global access.

// TAKE · MinIO is the default answer since everything already speaks S3 and it ships as a single binary, though licensing and feature gating have pushed some teams to Garage, which runs happily on small, geographically spread nodes. Ceph is the serious option when you also need block and file storage from one cluster but demands real operational effort, and SlateDB is not a replacement at all, it is a storage engine that sits on top of object storage.
